City partners with Sacramento Public Library to launch electric tricycle lending program

Sacramento Public Library patrons can now check out e-trikes from a small fleet available at the Colonial Heights Library (4799 Stockton Blvd.) in South Sacramento.

The pilot program launched last week as part of a partnership with the City of Sacramento and funding from a California Energy Commission grant.

“We’re so excited to partner with the Sacramento Public Library to provide this alternative mode of transportation for the community,” said City Sustainability Analyst Rachel Patten. “Launching this pilot program is one step in helping people access sustainable choices wherever possible.”

The three-wheeled electric tricycles are ideal for running errands around the neighborhood or cruising short distances. They also feature a large rear cargo basket to stow gear and groceries.

Library cardholders who are at least 18 years old and in good standing can check out an e-trike for up to three weeks. The electric vehicles cannot be reserved in advance.

“People are always surprised about what they’ll find at the library,” said Cathy Crosthwaite, Sacramento Public Library deputy director. “The library is ever-evolving to meet the community’s changing needs. We love to surprise and delight people every time they visit.”

Currently, there are five e-trikes available for use at Colonial Heights Library. Staff will explore expanding the program to other libraries nd the addition of more e-trikes in the coming months.
